Gina DeSimone & the Moaners
Gina DeSimone and the Moaners serve up
an eccentric, eclectic mix of sounds from a range of eras – blues,
swing, and classic rock. Guitar master Gina DeSimone has a rich, sexy
voice full of blue smoke. Born and raised in the Silver Spring area,
Gina picked up the guitar at age 9 and began taking lessons at a local
music store. "I wanted drums," she explains, "but my
parents gave me a guitar instead. Turns out I love playing guitar, but
I think my songs are so rhythmically oriented because there's a bit
of drummer in me." As a teenager, Gina broke the stereotype of
the female folk guitarist by playing lead guitar in rock bands. Today
she backs up many of the area's finest songwriters and bands. She began
a lifetime of guitar teaching when the same local music store where
she learned guitar called to ask if she was interested in teaching.
In addition to running a studio of dedicated students, she continues
honing her skills by taking lessons from master guitarists like Al Petteway,
Del Rey, Steve James, and Mary Flower. Pat Quinn adds unstoppable energy
on bass and guitar as well as pinpoint harmonies. Quick-witted Ron Goad
sets the foundation with rock solid rhythm, while David Savage lifts
off with mind-blowing cornet and harmonica solos. In addition to playing
percussion himself, Ron Goad's efforts to promote and showcase local
musicians earned a 2008 Wammie from the Washington Area Music Association
as the individual most supportive of Washington music.

Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a North African band from
Algeria and Morocco. Their music is influenced by the different ethnic
groups that live in the region. Gibraltar's music is not restricted
to one genre, and the styles of music cross every border that the band
members crossed in their paths. From the coast of the Mediterranean
and the Atlantic to the deserts of the Sahara, Gibraltar blends the
sounds, dances, and trances of their region into their own style. They
play both familiar and unusual instruments. Growing up in North Africa
as Berbers, Kamel, Abdel, and Hacene were exposed to different languages
(Berber, Arabic, French, English and Spanish) and consequently to different
types of music such as rock, blues, jazz, traditional Berber, gypsy,
French, rai, and chaabi (popular North African). On stage, Gibraltar
sings in all these languages and the repertoire varies between rumba,
reggae, gnawi, rai, and Berber songs. The variety keeps the music rich
and audiences attracted and interested.
