Ian Walters and Friends
Ian Walters and Friends play spirited,
updated blues and standards as well as contemporary tunes. Leader Ian
Walters is a gifted piano player and vocalist whose inventive interpretations
of great old songs make them new again. After studying classical piano
for 13 years, he found his musical soul in vintage blues, R&B, American
standards, and early rock and roll. He performs regularly as a solo
or duo and with several bands in the Washington area. Vocalist and songwriter
Maureen Andary sings classic jazz and blues as well as original songs
that are inspired by the chord changes of 1930s pop music. A native
Washingtonian, she studied classical flute and voice as a teenager,
performing in musical theatre productions, choirs, and instrumental
ensembles. She discovered her affinity for classic jazz and blues while
a student at New York University. She is a regular performer at Washington
area clubs and other venues. Ian Walters and Friends will be joined
by several other talented musicians.

Tone Rangers
The Tone Rangers delights audiences from
coast to coast with its dynamic blend of tight harmonies, inventive
arrangements, and keen wit. In a few choreographed minutes, the Tone
Rangers propel through 900 years of Western music--from Gregorian chant
to classic rock to TV theme songs--in a fresh approach to contemporary
a cappella music and comedy. National finalists in the 2002 Harmony
Sweepstakes (the Superbowl of a cappella), the Tone Rangers are also
three-time winners of Mid-Atlantic "Audience Favorite" and "Best Arrangement"
awards. Catherine Lewis of the Washington Post writes: "The octet shed
those preppy images, singing not one but two Elvis tunes -- complete
with pelvic swivels and facial tics. Flawless harmonies are a given
in a group with eight voices that are consistently pitch-perfect, but
the Rangers supplemented that precision with a congenial stage presence.
Their arrangements transitioned smoothly (they somehow worked both the
"Flintstones" theme and "Chopsticks" into the middle of a love song),
and each voice filled the space where a rock band would have put a guitar,
a sitar or even a trumpet. The Rangers had their serious moments, too,
performing a Yeats poem set to song ("Down by Salley Gardens"), an original
composition), and Paul Carrack's "I Need You," which featured Gil Keteltas's
sweet tenor gliding gracefully over the melody." The Tone Rangers won
two 2007 Wammies from the Washington Area Music Association for a capella
group and recording, and were also nominated as artist of the year and
song of the year.
