Blue Rhythm Boys
Blending the blues of Mississippi John Hurt with the "hot club" swing of Django Reinhardt, the Blue Rhythm Boys delight audiences with their tight vocals and hot guitar playing. Tom Mitchell and Jim Stephanson bring authenticity and originality to their own smoky mix of hot jazz, blues and hokum. Mitchell is known for his hard-driving swing/jazz guitar playing and singing. From 1993 to 2003, he toured as guitarist with Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. He can be heard on Hicks' recording "Beatin' the Heat" with Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones, Bette Midler, Brian Setzer and Tom Waits. Jim Stephanson's unique guitar style draws on the influences of Chet Atkins, Danny Gatton, Les Paul and Mississippi John Hurt. The Washington Post said: "Washington, DC, can lay claim to a heritage of great electric guitar players; Jim Stephanson is part of that legacy." He is a fixture on the Washington DC music scene, working on his own projects and doing pick-up stage and studio work. Tom Mitchell was nominated by the Washington Area Music Association for a 2007 Wammie in the big band vocalist category.
