Razz'm Jazz'm
Razz'm Jazz'm plays washboard/jug (or skiffle or spasm) band music, which has a long and glorious history in American music (as well as a somewhat ignominious history in minstrelsy). The broad category of bands using "found" instruments includes plantation music, rural and streetcorner jug bands, and 1920s jazz washboard bands. Emile "Stalebread" Lacoume's turn of the century New Orleans spasm band, the Washboard Rhythm Kings, Spike Jones, Dave Van Ronk, Jim Kweskin, the Memphis Jug Band, and the Hoosier Hotshots are just a few of the better known manifestations. Many folks brush up against this kind of music when they are in first grade -- you know, the triangle, flute, drum pad bands. And then again when they join the senior citizens kazoo band, but never anything in between. Razz'm Jazz'm aims to correct that omission and, at the same time, to keep the tradition. The band includes Mark Cox (vocals, guitar, saw, yodeling); Pete Hinz (violin, vocals); Tom Layton (washboard, rhumba box); Tom Mindte (mandolin); Dick Parks (trumpet, trombone, vocals); Kathy Reitz (bass, vocals); Marv Reitz (vocals, guitar, jug, clarinet, bass clarinet, baritone sax); Don Rouse (clarinet, slide whistle): and Dick Sackett (banjo).

Miss Tess and Bon Ton Parade
Miss Tess has a "Modern Vintage" sound that bridges eras and genres. True to the tradition, her vocals can soar or caress as Tess strums and picks her way through an array of styles -- from ragtime to blues, country to swing. Tess writes songs with the folk sensibilities of a troubadour that engage roots-devotees and newcomers alike. A typical set conjures a cast of dreamers and lovers, down on their luck and charming their ways in and out of trouble, with familiar faces mingling in the crowd, courtesy of folks like Bessie Smith and Tom Waits-perpetual muses to her style. As Justin Shatwell of Yankee Magazine explains: "Although it may be true that every musician is a dreamer, only the good ones can convince you to join in on their fantasies. Armed with a rhythm guitar, a songbook full of down-on-your-luck lyrics, and a seemingly endless supply of fancy hats, Miss Tess is reimagining the golden age of jazz in 21st-century Boston and taking the rest of us along for the ride.....Tess has recorded four albums of standards and original songs, but the best way to experience her is live. As her smoky voice drags seductively behind the rhythm, she transforms even the dingiest barroom into a dance floor and tempts you-for one night, at least-to drift back to a classier time." Miss Tess was raised in Maryland by musician parents who are active members of the local music community, then moved to Boston to pursue her own musical career. In 2008, she was named Outstanding Folk Artist of the Year in the Boston Music Awards. She also won the 27th biannual Open Mic Shootout at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA. As the winner, she performed on the 2008 Cayamo music cruise with headliners Emmylou Harris and Lyle Lovett.
