School Based Programs
Singing A-Z for participatory musical programs by a combination of professional and volunteer musicians to be given at Brent and Gibbs Elementary schools.
Capitol Hill Learning Group for parent-run coop for 80 pre-school children housed at St. James Church on 8th St. NE. Funds would be used by group to make improvements to the space.
Robert Brent Elementary School PTA to cover costs associated with two workshops, one for teachers and the other for parents, to train them in “Responsive Classroom” principles.
Robert Brent Elementary School PTA to cover costs associated with two workshops for parents in principles of “Everyday Math” curriculum.
Robert Brent Elementary School for costs associated with beautification of grounds of the school. Brent School was recently awarded one of 200 national grants from the National Gardening Association which will support landscaping.
Shakespeare Alliance (a partnership among the Folger Shakespeare Library, KIPPDC, Key Academy and Capitol Hill Day School) for partial funding of ongoing program providing local school children the opportunity to study Shakespeare and perform on the Elizabethan stage at the Folger. 20 students from CHDS and 13 from KIPP DC will participate.
Capitol Hill Cooperative Nursery School for support of longstanding program for 3 year olds taught by Ms. Frances.
Stuart Hobson Middle School for Dinner Club for students and parents who eat at ethnically varied restaurants once a month.
Stuart-Hobson Middle School for costs associated with participation in National History Day program. Funds needed for paper and ink for internet research, poster board, snacks and thank you gifts for judges and certificates and ribbons for winning students. Students from Stuart Hobson participated in National History day at the national level last year.
Stuart-Hobson Middle School for purchase materials needed to reproduce historic quilt documenting westward expansion. Community volunteers will help with the actual sewing. Project also involves reading period diaries of quilters.
Social Justice Printmaking Workshop to underwrite week-long workshop for Stuart-Hobson 8th graders who will study printmaking as it relates to social justice movements (civil rights, labor rights/immigration and suffrage) and will be encouraged to articulate their own ideas through creation of original art. Total program also includes field trip to New York to visit Ellis Island. Grant would cover about half the expenses of the overall program.
Marla McLean, School Within a School at Peabody to cover bus transportation and entrance fees allowing 44 kindergarten students to visit the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore to view “All Faiths Beautiful” art show and participate in a workshop.
Music Department/Stuart-Hobson Middle School to cover expenses associated with annual musical production- budget is for field trips to familiarize children with musical theater and our funds would be used to underwrite this activity.
Two Rivers Public Charter School for purchase of “Read Naturally” software program. “Read Naturally incorporates teacher modeling by having students read along while listening to a professional recording of a high interest story.”
Two Rivers Public Charter School to assist in landscaping of new facility in an industrial looking stretch of 4th St. NE. CHCF funds would provide “meeting support,” “professional landscape design services”’ and planters for bulbs already donated.
Two Rivers Public Charter School for purchase of books allowing teachers to work with students to improve their math concepts. Multiple copies of books needed to work with students in small groups.
Watkins elementary School, International Week for partial funding of costs associated with International Week, to be held next June. Funds would cover art supplies, printing of “passports,” purchase of musical instruments and compact discs and individual classroom budgets for costs associated with program.
Stuart-Hobson Middle school to purchase 14 three beam mechanical scale balances to use in science instruction for 5th grade science classes.
Watkins Urban Living Schoolyard Project $2,000 for materials needed to maintain well established garden project. – mulch, plants and seeds and tools.
Watkins Elementary School for a project to make ceramic and fused glass bowls themed to International Week celebration in the spring. Funding covers art and publicity materials.
John Tyler Elementary School PTA for purchase of Spanish language software and books for 2 year old Spanish immersion program for 3 and 4 year olds. Tyler has been designated a “pilot” school by DCPS in part because of the Spanish immersion and literacy programs.
St. Peter’s School to cover costs associated with 6 weeks of neighborhood history for 5th graders – cameras, art supplies, refreshments for reception, ball caps and printing (of booklet the kids will write).
Capitol Hill Cluster School costs associated with bringing Odyssey of the Mind program to Peabody, Watkins and Stuart Hobson
Capitol Hill Cluster School Montessori to provide a semester of weekly classes for 32 Montessori students with Master Kim Dong, instruction in “homedo chi” – “integrated mind/body/spirit educational practice” related to tae kwan do and tai chi.
After School Programs for Children
College Bound, Inc. in support of Sherwood Recreation center of city-wide tutoring/mentoring program for high school students.
Dance for TGIF program to cover salary for dance teacher, purchase of music and costumes for weekly dance program for children from 5 to 12 enrolled in the TGIF Tutorial Humanities program housed at Capitol Hill Methodist Church.
Boy Scout Troop 500 to underwrite the cost of cleaning the winter coats collected by the scouts as part of their major service project, a coat drive. Capitol Hill cleaners discounts cleaning rate $5 per coat. Coats are donated to Samaritan Ministries, Sasha Bruce Youthworks, CAG and Friendship House Clothing Center. Last year they collected 225 coats.
Friends of Tyler School for maintenance and training program on FOTS computers. Many students use the FOTS computer center for homework. Improving the maintenance on computers will free up tutors to work with the students. Local computer service company is giving FOTS a special rate on its services. 40 - 50 kids participate each year, the majority from Potomac Gardens and Hopkins Public housing.
Capitol Hill Baseball & Softball League for costs of spring Cal Ripken/DC Babe Ruth program for three teams based at Ludlow-Taylor. Costs include uniforms and team fees (insurance and registration). Many participants are unable to pay.
Boy Scout Troop 380 (St. Peter’s Church) underwriting for equipment for rafting, rock climbing, camping etc for members of troop who need financial assistance.
Sports on the Hill for purchase of two new soccer goals. 400 Hill kids participate in Soccer on the Hill.
Capitol Hill Arts Workshop for tuition assitance. This amount provides a year’s worth of private music lessons or a semester of weekly art classes plus van service.
Saturday Environmental Academy for ongoing free environmental education program for 7th and 8th graders. Overnight camping trip at FLOC Outdoor Education Center is centerpiece of varied program.
Everybody Wins! DC to underwrite costs associated with “Power Lunch” program which brings adult reading mentors to read with kids at Brent (120 kids) and Tyler (90) once a week. Each school program is coordinated by a paid coordinator. Many volunteers are from congressional offices.
Capitol Hill Computer Corner for costs associated with after school program of homework assistance and technology based instruction for students in grades 4 – 7. 30 – 40 students at Payne elementary will participate in program from 3 – 6 pm.
Capitol Hill Group Ministry & Potomac Gardens Resident Council underwriting for “Mission Possible,” program at Potomac Gardens offering after-school homework assistance and healthy life skills as well as other activities to 20 children ages 4 – 12 in Potomac Gardens.
Little Lights Urban Ministries underwriting for large after school tutoring and homework assistance program. It meets 4 times a week and caters mainly to children from Potomac Gardens. Children attend John Tyler Elementary and Hine Junior High
Social Service Programs
Capitol Hill Group Ministry – Family Resource Center assistance in covering costs of intensive case management offered through center in Potomac Gardens. Between 60 and 80 families seen a year.
Capitol Hill Group Ministry – Social Services Office in support of emergency assistance offered by long-term staff which answer between 250 – 500 appeals for help each month. Program provides limited financial assistance but also assesses other needs and offers referrals.
Food & Friends for services bringing prepared meals or groceries to 235 people living with “life-challenging” illnesses on Capitol Hill.
Capitol Hill Village for support of program to facilitate people staying in their own homes on the hill as they age. Program funded by membership fees and some grants.
Sasha Bruce Youthwork, Inc. support of Zocalo Outreach Program of support for at-risk families on the Hill. Huge organization.
STRIVE DC to buy tokens and farecards for STRIVE participants as they go on job searches. This is an effective 3 week job readiness program with long-term staff.
Arts and Recreation Programs
Momentum Dance Theatre for annual production of Jazz Hip-Hop Nutcracker which will be performed on two weekends in the Stuart Hobson auditorium. Many Hill families participate as performers and audience; free tickets provided.
Friends of Fort Dupont support for Schools Skate for Fitness program. This would pay for ten group visits. Thanks to last year’s Keller Award, Capitol Hill schools are already participating and receiving funding for bus transportation but this allows for more school visits for this very popular physical education class.
The Corner Store Arts Festival help in underwriting costs of new neighborhood arts festival which brings a varied program of low cost, high quality performances to a small, local venue. New this year.
Folger Shakespeare Library in support of Shakespeare’s birthday festival, neighborhood event (though drawing many visitors from off the Hill). Annual event in April includes many activities for children.
Gay/Lesbian/Bixexual/Transgendered Arts Consortium for underwriting of annual “Remembrance of Martin Luther king, Jr.” concert to be held in January at Capitol Hill Presbyterian Chruch. This is a free event.
Lesbian & Gay Chorus of Washington, DC C. Paul Heins, music Director, 546-1549 underwriting for January concert, “Celebrating History and People of DC.” Concert is on the Hill.
Joy of Motion Dance Center underwriting for Motion Express, outreach dance education project based at Atlas Performing Arts Center. Students at participating schools get free weekly dance classes and the opportunity to attend rehearsals and classes at Atlas as well as the chance to perform. Schools include Ludlow-Taylor elementary School, Maury Elementary, Myrtilla miner Elementary and Stuart Hobson as well as several charter schools.
Shakespeare Theatre Company for city-wide program offering “a nurturing place during non-school hours for young people to explore their creative voices.
Theater Alliance to help support resident arts program at H Street Theater which seeks to present “new or rarely produced work geared toward attracting diverse and alternative audiences to our Northeast community.”
D.C. Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative, Inc. for Capitol Hill school children to participate in Arts for Every student program offering free tickets to cultural events.
Capital City Symphony (at Atlas Performing Arts Center) Support requested for annual family concert to be held November 11. theme is “Tell me a Story” and concert will feature Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, excerpts from Rodeo and other selections. Concert is free to children under 16.
412. Capitol Hill Chorale to underwrite costs of bringing composer Kevin Siegfried to Washington for December concerts featuring his work.
Catalyst Theater Company Support for costs associated with marketing small professional theater on Capitol Hill. This is Catalyst’s sixth year as a resident company based at CHAW.
Enhancement of the Physical Environment
700 block Eye Street Association SE, Jeff Gannon, chairman, 202-409-3850 to underwrite planting and maintaining of tree boxes and pocket park on the 700 block of Eye ST. SE. Costs include mulch, fertilizer and plants. Labor provided by volunteers.
Trees for Capitol Hill for purchase of ten trees to be planted by volunteers in public places on Capitol Hill.
Barracks Row Main Street a special Matching Grant Award to Barracks Row Main Street to provide assistance in their fundraising efforts to support the organization.
Mark Holler (Ginko Gardens), Friends of the Southeast Library to help complete the renovation of garden at Southeast Library by purchasing and installing cast aluminum patio furniture and benches.
