Robert L. Herrema Awards
In 2004 we established the Robert L. Herrema Awards as a lasting recognition of the contributions made to our neighborhood by visionary local developer Bob Herrema, who died in 2003. The awards are given annually to individuals, businesses and organizations for enhancements of Capitol Hill’s urban landscape, including residential and commercial development, park and public space improvements, private gardens, playgrounds, public art and other environmental improvements.

Bob Herrema left a position as chief of staff to Senator Lowell Weicker of Connecticut to work full time in building and renovation on Capitol Hill. Among his many projects were the transformation of the old Logan School and the Carbery School into residential buildings. He also converted the old Faith Baptist Church at 9th and South Carolina S.E. into exciting residential units, many of them featuring the original stained glass windows. Bob was a longtime member of the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals (CHAMPS) and represented that organization on the Eastern Market steering committee.
